push the envelope 挑戰極限

Envelope是信封，但是在push the envelope這個(gè)習慣用語(yǔ)里，envelope可不是信封的意思。它是個(gè)技術(shù)性的詞匯，指機械或其它設備的性能范圍，或者功用極限。比方說(shuō)，如果一輛汽車(chē)的設計規格為最高時(shí)速180公里，但是你卻以190公里的時(shí)速駕駛這輛車(chē)，那么你就是在push the envelope，超越它的性能范圍了，或者是在玩命了。

Test pilots often have to put themselves into danger. Sometimes they have to push the envelope to see whether a newly designed plane really can meet the limits the designers planned. 試飛飛行員常不得不冒生命危險。有時(shí)候他們必須讓新設計的飛機挑戰極限，以便測試飛機是否真能達到設計人員所設定的'安全極限。

在這里push the envelope意思是超越安全限度。

但是push the envelope這個(gè)習慣用語(yǔ)的應用范圍并不局限于機械工程。它也轉用到日常生活中，用來(lái)指人際關(guān)系的緊張化。來(lái)看下面這個(gè)例子：

He pushed the envelope when he hit his wife at the party after getting drunk. She asked for divorce the next day. 他喝醉并當眾毆打妻子的行為已經(jīng)超過(guò)了他太太的忍耐限度，所以太太第二天就提出要和他離婚。
