　　在當代，元旦指公元紀年的歲首第一天。自西歷傳入我國以后，元旦一詞便專(zhuān)用于新年，傳統的舊歷年則稱(chēng)春節。

　　而在此之前，元旦一直是指農歷歲首第一天的。元是“初”“始”的意思，旦指“日子”，元旦合稱(chēng)即是“初始的日子”，也就是一年的第一天。1949年9月27日，中國人民政治協(xié)商會(huì )議第一界全體會(huì )議決議：“中華人民共和國紀年采用公元紀年法”，即是我們所說(shuō)的陽(yáng)歷，為了區別農歷和陽(yáng)歷兩個(gè)新年，又鑒于農歷二十四節氣中的“立春”恰在農歷新年的前后，因此便把農歷正月初一改稱(chēng)為“春節”，陽(yáng)歷一月一日定為“元旦”，至此，元旦才成為全國人民的歡樂(lè )節日。

　　慶賀新年的開(kāi)始，歡度元旦可說(shuō)是世界各國各地區的.普遍習俗。在我國，還列入了國定假日。我國和世界上大多數國家、地區采用公歷紀年法，把1月1日定為新年的開(kāi)始，稱(chēng)作“元旦”。

　　由于世界各國所處的經(jīng)度位置不同，各國的時(shí)間也不同，因此，“元旦”的日期也有不同。如大洋洲的島國湯加位于日界線(xiàn)的西側，它是世界上最先開(kāi)始的一天的地方，也是最先慶祝元旦的國家。

　　而位于日界線(xiàn)東側的西薩摩亞則是世界上最遲開(kāi)始新的一天的地方。按公歷計，我國是世界上第12個(gè)開(kāi)始新年的國家。
