我國古代在清明時(shí)節就有插柳植樹(shù)的傳統，而近代植樹(shù)節則最早由美國的內布拉斯加州發(fā)起。19世紀以前，內布拉斯加州是一片光禿禿的荒原，樹(shù)木稀少，土地干燥，大風(fēng)一起，黃沙漫天，人民深受其苦。1872年，美國著(zhù)名農學(xué)家朱利葉斯·斯特林·莫爾頓提議在內布拉斯加州規定植樹(shù)節，動(dòng)員人民有計劃地植樹(shù)造林。當時(shí)州農業(yè)局通過(guò)決議采納了這一提議，并由州長(cháng)親自規定今后每年4月份的第三個(gè)星期三為植樹(shù)節。這一決定做出后，當年就植樹(shù)上百萬(wàn)棵。此后的16年間，又先后植樹(shù)6億棵，終于使內布拉斯加州10萬(wàn)公頃的荒野變成了茂密的森林。為了表彰莫爾頓的功績(jì)，1885年州議會(huì )正式規定以莫爾頓先生的生日4月22日為每年的植樹(shù)節，并放假一天。
在美國，植樹(shù)節是一個(gè)州定節日，沒(méi)有全國統一規定的日期。但是每年4、5月間，美國各州都要組織植樹(shù)節活動(dòng)。例如，羅德艾蘭州規定每年5月份的第二個(gè)星期五為植樹(shù)節，并放假一天。其他各州有的是固定日期，也有的是每年由州長(cháng)或州的其他政府部門(mén)臨時(shí)決定植樹(shù)節日期。每當植樹(shù)節到來(lái)，以學(xué)生為主的社會(huì )各界群眾組成浩浩蕩蕩的植樹(shù)大軍，投入植樹(shù)活動(dòng)。

The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. It was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton (1832-1902), a Nebraska journalist and politician originally from Michigan. Throughout his long and productive career, Morton worked to improve agricultural techniques in his adopted state and throughout the United States when he served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture. But his most important legacy is Arbor Day.
Why do the people plant trees? It is very easy. Because they want to protect the environment. There are many people who want to earn the money form only cutting down trees. So more and more trees are cut by them. But kind people want to protect the environment and make the air clean. So they plant trees as many as they can.
All these actions show that people should pay more attention to the environment. We want to make it better, don’t we? So we must plant more trees to protect the environment.In the years following that first Arbor Day, Morton's idea spread beyond Nebraska with Kansas, Tennessee, Minnesota and Ohio all proclaiming their。 own Arbor Days. Today all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day although the dates may vary in keeping with the local climate. (State Arbor Days) At the federal level, in 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day. Arbor Day is also now celebrated in other countries including Australia. Variations are celebrated as 'Greening Week' of Japan, 'The New Year's Days of Trees' in Israel, 'The Tree-loving Week' of Korea, 'The Reforestation Week' of Yugoslavia, 'The Students' Afforestation Day' of Iceland and 'Th he National Festival of Tree Planting' in India. Julius Sterling Morton would be proud. Sometimes one good idea can make a real difference.
