I have always admired the long healthy life my grandparents have. They are older than 80 years of age and they are still alive and kicking! How do they do that!? My grandparents plant vegetables and grow rice themselves; even in their old age they still make food for themselves! I guess that is why they can remain healthy. More importantly they remain humble and never ask for too much from life. Perhaps that makes them common, but they live a happy life. My grandmother once told me this:” I do not want to live long, only long enough for some grand children to be running around in my house”. Since my graduation from primary school, until now, every time on my birthday I make the same wish. I wish my parents will not fight anymore. I am not complaining that they gave me a bad childhood, they just fight so much! I am unhappy but that does not mean they do not love me. They do! They love me with all their heart. I love my parents also; I want them to live a happy life as well.
I want to travel this great country of ours. I want to see the beauty of our country. I want to see the miracles that made this country great! I want to go from the east to west, from the north all the way down to the south! I have a dream, that one day I can travel and see my country with my family and friends! If that is not possible, seeing my country on my own is good enough also.

It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.
About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.
While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said “no.” I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. “Look,” he said, “We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails，but one who never quits.”
I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition!
As it turned out, my dear old professor was right. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference! Thank you.

我的經(jīng)歷具體是這樣的：我是1980年從內蒙古考到北大的，比大家高了好多屆。我在北大學(xué)英文，然后又在北大教書(shū)。教書(shū)六年之后，在1990年，我求學(xué)到美國。我發(fā)現到了，美國一下飛機，我一句話(huà)也聽(tīng)不懂。當時(shí)我想，至少我學(xué)了幾年英文，所以打算繼續學(xué)英文。正在我在考慮到哪里去的時(shí)候，我聽(tīng)到一種說(shuō)法，叫做everybody in American can speak English。那么我又怎么能夠在美國賺錢(qián)呢？所以，我必須改變這個(gè)想法。于是我該學(xué)了學(xué)計算機。計算機碩士畢業(yè)以后，我在美國的貝爾實(shí)驗室做了兩年的軟件工程師。在1995年，“新東方”的創(chuàng )始人俞敏洪來(lái)到了美國，在他的建議下，我有回國，開(kāi)始參加“新東方”的創(chuàng )建。我和俞敏洪在北大是同班同學(xué)——“新東方”的五個(gè)“創(chuàng )業(yè)元老”里有三個(gè)是北大的同學(xué)。除了我們兩個(gè)還有一個(gè)是“新東方”的圖書(shū)總策劃包凡一老師，他是“新東方”的寫(xiě)作專(zhuān)家。我在大學(xué)時(shí)代是他們的班長(cháng)，他們兩個(gè)當時(shí)是全班最落后的學(xué)生。我那時(shí)的主要精力和時(shí)間都花在每天晚上陪他們兩個(gè)在湖畔散步，勸
他們不要跳下去。我告訴他們說(shuō)：“你們將來(lái)一定會(huì )成才的�！钡搅�96年，我在新東方擔任副校長(cháng)的時(shí)候，有一個(gè)大學(xué)生就問(wèn)我說(shuō)：“王老師，你上大學(xué)時(shí)四年都是他們的班長(cháng)，你現在卻是他們的副校長(cháng)，你的心理平衡怎么找？”我說(shuō)：“不用找，我現在心理是最平衡的。我當初當班長(cháng)最大的夙愿就是幫助這兩個(gè)后進(jìn)青年成才。今天看到他們已經(jīng)紛紛成才了，我的夙愿已經(jīng)了了。平衡徹底找到了�！薄覀兊拇_都要找到一個(gè)平衡的方法，只有心態(tài)平衡下來(lái)，你才能夠干成偉大的事業(yè)。
在美國的時(shí)候我學(xué)計算機之前，還有一段小插曲。那就是我險些報考了哈佛的人力學(xué)系。我離開(kāi)北大之后，吸引我的學(xué)校只有兩所，一所是英國的牛津大學(xué)，就是Oxford University；另一所呢就是Harvard University。那時(shí)候，哈佛大學(xué)人力學(xué)系的系主任，對我進(jìn)行了面試之后覺(jué)得可以錄取我，并且提出可以給我提供五年的Scholarship。他說(shuō)：“你只要答應我一個(gè)條件，”我說(shuō)：“什么條件？”——這個(gè)教授研究的是非常偏的一個(gè)科目，所以招生好多年都沒(méi)有找到一個(gè)合適的學(xué)生。他是在人力學(xué)系研究中國文化中苗族文化的�！f(shuō)：“只要你跟我學(xué)苗語(yǔ)，我就給你獎學(xué)金�！蔽艺f(shuō)：“可以�！钡�，我冷靜下來(lái)之后想：我拿了這些錢(qián)，在五年之內，過(guò)的是天上人間的日子。就算不能從哈佛大學(xué)畢業(yè)，也能夠肄業(yè)。將來(lái)至少能夠跟孫子夸口說(shuō)，爺爺當年進(jìn)過(guò)哈佛。但是這還不行，因為我拿到這個(gè)學(xué)位，最終的目的是要找個(gè)飯碗。我就考慮，在北美這樣大片的土地上，有多少地方需要我這樣的人才呢？——苗族文化專(zhuān)家。通過(guò)“研究”，我發(fā)現，全北美只有一個(gè)地方需要，就是哈佛大學(xué)、人力學(xué)系、這位老師。所以，如果全北美只有一個(gè)機會(huì )，他的目標里只有我一個(gè)人，那么這個(gè)機會(huì )對我來(lái)說(shuō)是百分之百的！但是，五年之后，我仍然處于一個(gè)非常劣勢的地位。我如果能在哈佛大學(xué)拿到學(xué)位，接下來(lái)的夢(mèng)想就是當上哈佛大學(xué)的教授、終身教授。美國大學(xué)關(guān)于終身教授的規定：只要這個(gè)教授不去世，你就別想替代他。我想，萬(wàn)一我六十歲就“夭折“了，那位教授八十多歲還健在，我也還是助教。想到這兒，我就對那位教授說(shuō)：“I want to learn something different�！�
當時(shí)是1990年，計算機在美國變得popular。而且招生的指標還有70個(gè)，我覺(jué)得這是個(gè)attract opportunity，于是決定學(xué)計算機。如果學(xué)計算機，我就可以成為一個(gè)“計算機科學(xué)家”，就可以make money。但當時(shí)，我已經(jīng)十年沒(méi)摸過(guò)數學(xué)了，計算機也從來(lái)沒(méi)有接觸過(guò)。我想，我能不能學(xué)計算機呢？我用亞里士多德的“三段論”來(lái)推導這個(gè)問(wèn)題：計算機是人發(fā)明的東西，凡是人都應該懂人發(fā)明的東西。最后，如果我學(xué)不了計算機，我就不是人。得出這個(gè)結論之后，我就要做一些實(shí)際的調查，看一看計算機到底是什么。我到了紐約最大的書(shū)店，看看計算機架上到底有些什么書(shū)。其中有兩架書(shū)，
上面都有兩個(gè)共同的詞，這兩個(gè)詞深深地吸引了我，那就是programming languages。我看見(jiàn)的其實(shí)只有一個(gè)詞：languages。這個(gè)詞說(shuō)明我與計算機是有關(guān)系的——我想，漢語(yǔ)是一種language，英文是我的first foreign language，法語(yǔ)是我的二外語(yǔ)，德語(yǔ)是第三外語(yǔ)。這個(gè)“編程語(yǔ)言”與我所會(huì )的這四門(mén)語(yǔ)言一定有共同的地方，所以才能一樣叫語(yǔ)言。于是，我就挑了一本書(shū)，看自己能不能讀懂，結果發(fā)現沒(méi)有一頁(yè)讀懂的。但是我發(fā)現了編程中很重要的一樣東西，是邏輯流程。我就靠這兩點(diǎn)——語(yǔ)言和邏輯，和紐約州立大學(xué)計算機系的系主任約會(huì )，說(shuō)：“我是一個(gè)非常優(yōu)秀的人才，你必須錄取我�！彼戳宋业某煽�(jì)單以后，說(shuō)：“可是，你在北大學(xué)習的四年中，沒(méi)有一門(mén)課程與教學(xué)和計算機有關(guān)�！蔽艺f(shuō)：“請等一下，我給你陳述一下你為什么必須要我——哈佛大學(xué)正在在考慮錄取我呢！另外，我有三點(diǎn)非常強的優(yōu)勢。第一，計算機與其他機器相比最重要的`特點(diǎn)是它能安裝軟件，那么什么是軟件呢？”他說(shuō)：“programs �！蔽矣謫�(wèn)：“那么我們用什么來(lái)寫(xiě)這個(gè)programs呢？”他說(shuō)：“l(fā)anguage�！蔽艺f(shuō)：“那你再看看我的成線(xiàn)單，最重要的一個(gè)詞是什么？”老師說(shuō)：“l(fā)anguage�！蔽艺f(shuō)：“我已經(jīng)掌握了四門(mén)語(yǔ)言，再學(xué)一門(mén)方言是易如反掌�！苯淌谡f(shuō)：“有道理�！比缓笪矣终f(shuō)：“計算機能夠工作，它離不開(kāi)人預設的邏輯。我在北大做了六年老師，做老師最大的特點(diǎn)就是訓練一個(gè)人的邏輯思維結構。我已經(jīng)

I’m very glad to stand here andgive you a short speech. today my topic is “Life”. I hope you will like it , Man’s life is a process of growing up, actually I’m standing here is a growth. If a person’s life must constituted by various choices, then I grow up along with these choices.
Once I hope I can study in a college in future, however that’s passed, as you know I come here, now I wonder what the future holds for me. When I come to this school, I told to myself: this my near future, all starts here. Following I will learn to become a man, a integrated man, who has a fine body, can take on important task, has independent thought, an open mind, intensive thought, has the ability to judge right and wrong, has a perfect job.
If I can achieve this “future”, I think that I really grow up. And I deeply believe kindred, good-fellowship and love will perfection and happy in the future. How to say future? Maybe it’s a nice wish. Lets make up our minds, stick to it and surely well enjoy our life.

My topic today is “Never Say Sorry Again!”
Do you feel sorry for the animals that are killed by the millions every day? Do we really need to kill animals?
Let us now think of the reasons for using dead animals. People often use animals for food, make-up, medicine and especially for the clothes. Fur coats are definitely a luxury. Yes, they are warm but really they are mostly a symbol of wealth. Do you know how much a mink coat cost?
A report said in an open letter published recently, a Dutch animal-rights group has asked their much-loved Queen to stop wearing fur. The Group pointed out that making clothing from fur represents cruelty to animals. “ Fur belongs to animals, not to human beings.”
Nowadays a lot of greedy people hunt and kill wild animals and birds, so as to make money by selling their hides at high prices. This kind of killing should be stopped and seriously punished. If we don't take actions to protect the wild animals and birds, they will soon disappear from the globe. Man will one day find himself a very lonely creature on earth indeed.
Until such a day, when we finally realized that we no longer have these friends or neighbors, what are we human beings going to say? Sorry? No, it is too late to say sorry to them.
Ladies and Gentlemen, please consider what I have said to you this afternoon. Think carefully on whether we really need to use animals for our pleasure if you have come to the conclusion that we are wrong. Then we should now change our attitude so that we never say sorry again to the animal population. Thank you!
