Contrast of Phatic Language between English and Chinese

Abstract

Phatic language is a speech form with small amount of information for building and safeguarding harmonious and friendly interpersonal relationships. It plays an important role in cross-cultural communication. The aim of this thesis is to compare and study the differences of phatic language between English and Chinese. As everyone knows, language has very close relationship with culture. And the theory contained in culture determines the habit and way of language application. Likewise, phatic language is influenced by it too. And in the daily life, especially in the social occasion, phatic language is very important too. Saying more polite words shows not only respect to other people, but your culture. Contrasting phatic language between English and Chinese can not only be in favor of the harmonious atmosphere, but in favor of intercommunication. The first chapter of this thesis describes theory of phatic language; the second chapter contrasts the differences of phatic language between English and Chinese; the third chapter researches the applications of greetings and compliments of phatic language.

摘  要

應酬語(yǔ)是指為建立和維持和諧友好的人際關(guān)系而采用的具有很小新信息量的言語(yǔ)形式，它在跨文化交際中起了重要作用。本論文旨在對比研究應酬語(yǔ)在英漢語(yǔ)中的區別。眾所周知，語(yǔ)言和文化是緊密相連的，文化中所蘊涵的理論決定了語(yǔ)言應用的習慣和方式。同樣，應酬語(yǔ)也受之影響。而且在日常生活中，尤其在社交場(chǎng)合中，應酬語(yǔ)10分重要。多說(shuō)客氣話(huà)不僅表示尊重別人，而且表明自己有修養。對比研究英漢應酬語(yǔ)，不僅有利于雙方氣氛融洽，而且有益于國際間的交際。論文第1部分簡(jiǎn)述了應酬語(yǔ)蘊涵的原理，第2部分對比分析了英漢應酬語(yǔ)不同，第3部分研究了應酬語(yǔ)中的問(wèn)候語(yǔ)和恭維語(yǔ)在生活中的應用．
