The conflict between Civilization and Nature In Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the U’Urbervilles
Abstract
Tess of the DUrbervilles is one of the most important works written by Thomas Hardy. In this novel, Tess struggles bravely with her fate and the conventional morality, but she finally becomes the victim of her family and the society. The tragedy of Tess is caused by the conflict of nature and modern civilization. This thesis aims to analyze the conflict of nature and civilization in this novel. Tess is a daughter from nature. She has beautiful appearance as well as pure, kind soul; however she is finally strangled by the bourgeoisie morality and civilization. It reflects Hardy’s critical attitude on the capitalism civilization and affirmative attitude on nature.

摘 要
《德伯家的苔絲》是托馬斯•哈代最重要的小說(shuō)之1。在這部小說(shuō)中苔絲勇敢地和自己的命運以及傳統的道德作斗爭，最后卻成為了家庭和社會(huì )的犧牲品。苔絲的悲劇是現代文明和自然沖突的結果。本論文旨在探討這部小說(shuō)中文明與自然之間的沖突。大自然的女兒苔絲不僅擁有美麗的的外表，而且還有純潔善良的心靈；然而就是這樣1個(gè)大自然的女兒卻被資產(chǎn)階級的道德和文明所扼殺。苔絲的毀滅體現了哈代對于資產(chǎn)階級工業(yè)文明的強烈批判，同時(shí)也體現了作家對于大自然的肯定和贊美。
