Choices of Verbal Process Type and Expression of Implicit Discourse Attitude

Abstract

Critical Linguistics, a kind of instrumental linguistics based mainly on Hallidays systemic-functional grammar, has developed since 1970s. It aims to unveil the hidden relationship between language, power and ideology, for implicit attitude exists pervasively in any discourse. As one of the analytical tools in critical linguistics, the transitivity approach to discourse analysis began when M.A.K. Halliday (1971) made a transitivity analysis of William Goldings novel The Inheritors. This thesis adopts it as its analyzing framework.
In conducting a transitivity analysis of two English news discourses from China and the United Sates, the thesis here tends to investigate what implicit attitude hidden behind news discourses will be showed up when the news discourses are about the same event and of the same genre. Through the critical analysis of English news discourse from a transitivity perspective, the main findings obtained are as follows: news discourses are not so just or objective as they are proclaimed to be, and the different implicit attitude can be revealed through the different verbal processes used in the news discourse.

摘  要

    批評語(yǔ)言學(xué)是1門(mén)工具語(yǔ)言學(xué)，主要以韓禮德的系統功能語(yǔ)法為基礎，并發(fā)展于20世紀70年代。它以揭示語(yǔ)言、權利和意識形態(tài)的潛在關(guān)系為目的,因為隱形態(tài)度廣泛地存在于任何語(yǔ)篇之中。及物性語(yǔ)法是批評性語(yǔ)篇分析的主要工具之1。事實(shí)上，1971年韓禮德就對威廉•戈爾丁的長(cháng)篇小說(shuō)《繼承者》做了及物性分析，這標志著(zhù)及物性方法用于語(yǔ)篇分析的開(kāi)始。本論文則試圖將及物性方法用于英語(yǔ)新聞?wù)Z(yǔ)篇的分析。
本論文主要采用及物性理論這1批評性分析工具，對中國和美國的英語(yǔ)新聞?wù)Z(yǔ)篇進(jìn)行分析。其目的是研究對于同樣的新聞事件和同樣的新聞體裁，隱藏在新聞?wù)Z(yǔ)篇背后的意識形態(tài)是否能通過(guò)對新聞?wù)Z(yǔ)篇進(jìn)行及物性分析而體現出來(lái)。通過(guò)對所選定的英語(yǔ)新聞樣本進(jìn)行及物性的批評性分析，本論文得出的結論是:新聞?wù)Z(yǔ)篇并不像所聲稱(chēng)的那樣客觀(guān)，公正。對于不同國家，同1新聞事件的同1體裁的新聞報道，往往會(huì )反映出不同的隱性態(tài)度，而這1不同的隱性態(tài)度能通過(guò)分析英語(yǔ)新聞?wù)Z(yǔ)篇的動(dòng)詞過(guò)程類(lèi)型而反映出來(lái)。
