Functions of Headlines in English Newspaper from the Perspective of Functional Grammar

Abstract

Due to the specific and vivid linguistic features, significant function and status, a lot of scholars have been absorbed in the study of newspaper headlines and made a lot of valuable investigations into news language. This thesis aims to analyze the functions of headlines in English newspaper by applying the functional grammar of Halliday. First, the thesis introduces the theory and the importance of the newspaper headlines. This analytical framework provides a systematic method for investigating the functions of this specific type of language. Then, based on the basic theory and the analytical framework, the thesis gives an in-depth analysis of functions of newspaper headlines from the perspective of functional grammar. Case study is the principal method for this purpose. To sum up, newspaper headlines play a vital role in representing the world (ideational function) through transitivity system and voice, constructing social identities and establishing social relations (interpersonal function) through mood and modality, and achieving texture (textual function) through thematization and information structure. By studying the functions of the newspaper headlines, it can provide us an important guidance for the newspaper headlines writing.

摘  要

由于新聞標題其特定且形象的語(yǔ)言特色，重要的功能與地位，許多學(xué)者潛心研究并對其做出了大量有價(jià)值的研究。本文旨在運用韓禮德的功能語(yǔ)法來(lái)分析英文報紙新聞標題的功能。首先簡(jiǎn)要介紹了該理論及報紙新聞標題的重要性。這種分析框架為分析這種特定語(yǔ)言的功能提供了系統的方法�；�于基本的理論與分析框架，再從功能語(yǔ)法的角度對新聞標題進(jìn)行深入的分析。例證法是本文的主要分析方法。報紙新聞標題通過(guò)其及物系統實(shí)現構筑社會(huì )現實(shí)、傳播意識形態(tài)的概念功能，通過(guò)語(yǔ)氣-情態(tài)系統和語(yǔ)態(tài)實(shí)現構建社會(huì )身份和社會(huì )關(guān)系的人際功能，并通過(guò)主位和信息結構來(lái)組建聯(lián)貫語(yǔ)篇。通過(guò)研究新聞標題的功能，對新聞標題的寫(xiě)作具有重要的指導意義。
